Sturt ACC transition to RDA Sturt
Sturt ACC - along with other ACC’s - has been asked to provide advice about improving the engagement of regional communities, regional development organisations and local government with the Australian Government. We are conducting two regional community forums; holding one on one meetings with, or seeking direct responses from, key stakeholders; using information gathered from the recent Regional Expos we sponsored, and, undertaking an on-line survey.
The information gathered will enable us to formulate our recommendations for the role, charter, boundaries, structure, membership and reporting requirements of the new Regional Development Australia (RDA) Committees which will operate from 1 January 2009.
The Australian Government has also asked for advice about the principals and priorities for a new Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Program that will commence in July 2009, and the priorities for the types of local community infrastructure that could encourage economic growth.
For further information please contact Simon Millcock, Executive Officer on 8562 2511 or 0417 867 601 or simon.millcock@sturtacc.org.au
Rural Women's Gathering
The 13th Annual SA Rural Women's Gathering from 22 to 24 August 2008 will be held at Cornerstone College, Main Road, Mount Barker.
Gatherings offer opportunities for all rural women, whether they want agricultural information, business information, personal development or a social and recreational opportunity. The strength of Gatherings is in their diversity. Gatherings can help build bridges between women on farms and women involved in other businesses, in the works force or raising families. They can offer skills and introductory information for women who for many reasons may have been denied access to the information that they need to build strong rural communities, to be equal partners in their businesses or to establish networks.
This Gathering's theme is "Fruits of Life", and is the first time a Gathering has been held in the Adelaide Hills. The Annual Dinner will be held at the College on Saturday 23 August and the keynote speaker will be Mrs Nicki Downer, a local Adelaide Hills resident for many, many years. There will also be market stalls and tours of the local area have been arranged.
A diverse program is being arranged, with speakers and workshops to suit all tastes and early registration is recommended.
Rural Leadership Program
The SA Rural Leadership Program will be held from 16 to 19 September and 16 to 17 October 2008.
Leadership development is becoming increasingly important in the rural sector where continuing pressure on profit margins and increased competition in major overseas markets means that our farmers must rely on their own innovation and initiative to remain viable.
To succeed in this environment, our State must produce strong and capable leaders who have the ability to motivate and energise themselves, their industries, and their communities. These leaders will help take our rural and regional communities into the future. To achieve this they will require the skills of strategic planning, negotiation, lobbying, managing change, and team building.
The Program will guide and provide assistance to those leaders already forging ahead in their industry, and to those who have the potential to become the leaders of the future. Training will be provided to assist our future leaders to develop the skills they require to be successful. The Program will work closely with other rural groups to maximise leadership opportunities for rural people. The closing date for applications is 18 August 2008.
